Getting married....One day.

We have been engaged for a while now and in the beginning we said we wouldn’t start planning until we had been engaged for a year. Since then two other couples have gotten engaged so of course I seem to be getting bridal fever. I don't want to be a Bridezilla but it will probably happen.

We had a family event yesterday and every person has asked if we have set the date. We ended up just telling them we had set a YEAR and the date would come one day. I am all for getting into planning but I do feel it’s too soon and I promised ET we’d wait a year.

I find the expectation to get married ASAP completely insane. I know that everyone is different but the way I see it is the longer we wait the more we will be sure that our wedding is exactly what we want and that we have the money to fund it.

We also want to own a house before we set a date. I think it’s fair, we have lived together for 5 years so it’s seems like the next step for us.

The average Australian Wedding costs $27,000 - this blows my mind but I can see how it all adds up when the costs look like this;

Photographer - $3,500
Reception - $10,000
Dress - $3,000 - I cannot believe that people spend this much!!
Suit, shoes etc - $2,000
Bridesmaids/Groomsmen (clothes, gifts etc etc) - $2,000
Flowers – $2,000
Stylist etc - $3,000
We’re already at $25,500!!!! I haven’t even added hair/make up, celebrants, accommodation, entertainment or furniture hire!! OR A CAKE. Holy crap this is ridiculous.

Can I elope?

Looking at this I can see why more & more people taking the DIY option. I love making things but I will definitely not be stressing about how perfect it all is for my own wedding. I’ll happily share the load for someone else’s wedding though.

I thought I had a dream dress but my ideas are slowly evolving and now I am dreaming of a low cost dress that shocks everyone. When I close my eyes I see a green Elie Saab number but I will not be spending that much money. I think Rachel Gilbert will be my first stop.

Thinking about all this wedding stuff makes me panic and then I haven't even started on MOH/Bridesmaids.
I have always wanted my sister as my MOH and no one else. But as I have gotten older I have realised that we are worlds apart (she is 19 and I am 26) and we have been known to fight. All I can see is pink doodles, strippers and arguements. Plus she is off to Europe next year and I hope she stays as long as she can.
I know I want someone else by my side but at this stage I am not willing to ask anyone until we set a date. I have two people in mind but I am not 100% on either just yet. Maybe thats just because I am still freaking out over the wedding thing in general.

Has anyone else has the 'wedding panic'? What did you do to get over it?

  1. im already researching wedding dresses and im not even engaged yet! haha... but i've been with my man for 4.5 years so the day will come when we are ready.

and noooo way would i spend over $1000 on a wedding dress - i understand that its the norm but i have a knack of making budget look expensive ;) hehe
love that silver dress, btw. i'd love a sequinned dress rather than the traditional white.

  3. Hey Kasey, trawling through Voguette blogs and couldn't help commenting on this. We set our buget at 20k and we are under atm! woohoo! But it is so expensive. Good luck with the rest of your planning!
